SAMFORD’S DR. ROBERT SMITH DELIVERS MESSAGE
Liberty University welcomed Dr. Robert Smith as its Good Friday convocation speaker. Smith, an associate professor of preaching at Samford University in Alabama, said that “Good Friday is only good because we know what will take place on Sunday morning,” in reference to Easter Sunday.
Smith gave the analogy of a turtle on a fence post to explain how salvation works.
“If you see a turtle on the fence post, don’t think it got there by itself, because turtles don’t climb fence posts. Someone put it there,” he said.
When people become Christians, they are lifted up and given a free pass to heaven, just as the turtle received a free ride to the top of the fence post, Smith explained. This salvation is a free gift that should have more influence on Christian lives than any life circumstances.
“The word of God may not change circumstances for you, but it will change you,” Smith said. “You have access to God because of what Jesus Christ has done.”
